These are some of the traditional Curandera or Curandero beliefs. As with every tradition, each practitioner has his or her own beliefs that differ a little bit from each other. There is no belief that is better than the other. The best is what it works for you, regardless of what everyone says. I am writing with the “a” in Curandera, not because I am a feminine activist, just because I am a woman and I am writing about myself and the Curanderas around me.
A Curandera is a Mexican Shaman that practices the ancient healing traditions.
To fully understand a Curandera belief system would be too long, maybe boring and too complicated. These are some beliefs in a nutshell.
- The Curandera is an intermediary between the physical and the spiritual world.
- The spirits can influence the quality of life of the individual or the community.
- The Nature Spirits can be benevolent or harmful.
- The Curandera can treat diseases caused by harmful spirits.
- The Curandera’s spirit can travel through different realities to find solutions to problems or diseases.
- The Curandera can protect an individual or the community.
- Many Curanderas have knowledge of herbs and plants and will use them for healing or spiritual purposes.
- The Curandera treats a disease or problem by risking her life in the spiritual world.
- When you make a donation or give a gift to a Curandera, you are not only paying the Curandera but also you are paying the spirits for their help.
- The spirits look kindly when an individual takes care with the assistance of a Curandera.
Now that you know all these; don’t take the help of the Spirits or of a Curandera for granted. It is a great honor to be able to have somebody working in the Spirit work for you. Be grateful and open your heart for the blessings that may come after a Curandera has work on your behalf.
